On August 23, Donald Trump publicly responded to Canada's announcement of retaliatory tariffs following the collapse of trade negotiations. US 50% tariffs on goods worth ~20 billion dollars took effect on August 22, while Ottawa's mirror measures take effect on September 8.

After trade talks collapsed, the US imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian automobiles, alcohol, dairy products, and hundreds of other goods. Ottawa is preparing a mirror response.
